Internet Retailer Conference And Expo - IRCE 2012 -
The World's Largest ECommerce Conference

Colin Chase Speaking in 2012 at the world's largest eCommerce Conference in Chicago - IRCE 2012

At the Internet Retailer Conference and Expo in 2011, held in San Diego, Colin Chase dialoged with several professionals in his field. Having attended one IRCE previously as well as eTail in Baltimore in 2008, Chase recognizes the value of conferences for learning the latest trends, hearing from new and existing vendors, and for engaging in stimulating conversations about the industry in general with other professionals. One of the people Chase spoke with happened to be a coordinator with the Conference and this led to Chase being asked to present at the IRCE in Chicago the following year.

On Wednesday June 6th Colin Chase was scheduled to speak at 11:15 am to a group of "Small E-Retailers" (defined as being a start-up all the way to bringing in $30 million or more per year in online revenue). Chase's presentation was on the heels of the first day's main speakers, which included challenging and enlightening presentations from William Lynch Jr. (CEO, Barnes & Noble), Joel Anderson (President & CEO, Walmart.com US), and Fareed Zakaria (Host of Fareed Zakaria GPS which airs on CNN). Needless to say Chase was a bit nervous and excited to see that his own crowd totaled around 1,000 attendees (out of 10,000 attending the conference in 2012).

The presentation had been titled "How to make your online company look bigger than it is for the sole purpose of increasing sales" by the conference organizers, whereas Chase had a slightly different title for his presentation ("How to Look BIG: Growing Your Brand's Image Online and in the Public's Eye"). (Click here for the line-up of the Main Day's presentations including Chase's at 11:15 am. Or click here for Colin Chase's "Speakers" page on the IRCE website.)

One of the attendees remarked:

"Colin shared an excellent presentation at IRCE 2012 on 'How to Look Big: Growing your Brand's Image Online and in the Public's Eye'. His background in IT, Software Development, Marketing and E-Commerce gives him a unique perspective on Differentiation, Brand Marketing and Recognition. His experience in using a Press Release to generate SEO, tie in social media, and gain attention from national media and major brands to create brand partnerships was instrumental in executing his brand strategy and increase online sales!"

Global Warming and The Climate Project - 2006 through 2008

In 2006, Colin Chase had an epiphany regarding global warming after reading the book Boiling Point by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Ross Gelbspan. The book, published in 2004, outlined all the data coming in from scientists around the globe in regard to the steady and unrelenting rise of the global average temperature that was believed to be primarily caused by humans. This book led Chase on a journey for the next two years as he sought to bring attention to this subject through his own efforts.

Having met Al Gore during the summer of 2006 at the Chautauqua Institution after Mr. Gore had presented "An Inconvenient Truth" in the Amphitheater; Chase was more incited than ever. That autumn Mr. Gore invited Chase to be a part of his new initiative called "The Climate Project" in which Mr. Gore was training people to deliver his

presentation in their regions. Chase traveled to Nashville TN in January 2007 to attend the training, and within 3 months after the training he had presented the information over a dozen times. Chase spoke to crowds numbering in the hundreds throughout 2007 and 2008, with his largest speaking engagements being held at Fredonia State University and at the Chautauqua Institution. Chase continued to provide the "An Inconvenient Truth" presentation well into 2008, with his last presentation being before a large group at the Rich Corporation in Buffalo NY.

Chase also underwent training with the Union of Concerned Scientists in April of 2007, and was brought up to speed by this organization again in 2008. This was mentioned in various regional newspapers, and specifically here on page 3 of the CLN newsletter: http://www.chautauqualeadership.org/docs/NetworkNewsApril2007.pdf.

Chase also organized a large event for Step It Up 2007, bringing dozens of people onto a publicity march in his area. The event culminated with Chase presenting "An Inconvenient Truth" and then the local favorite band, "Big Leg Emma," played a gig. This event was captured by amateur video and can be seen here: http://www.archive.org/details/Step_it_up_2007_Jamestown_NY.

In late 2008 Chase had moved to a new city, and had started a relationship with his (now) fiance, thus he decided to step down from presenting the Climate Change information. However, as of the spring of 2010 he is reconsidering a new launch of this civic endeavor. Chase feels strongly that much needs to be done soon in this regard, and The Climate Project has reached out to him a few times asking if he would again start presenting the information.

Chautauqua Leadership Network - 2006 through 2007

Colin Chase was accepted into the Chautauqua County Leadership Network's Class of 2006 and underwent the year-long series of activities in leadership training. (See Chase's class of 2006 here: http://www.chautauqualeadership.org/class_2006.php.)

Chase greatly enjoyed the Leadership Network and believed it could take an expanded role in the county as a positive force for much needed change. In fact in 2007 Chase was nominated and accepted a position on the Leadership Network's Board of Directors and then took a role as Chairman of what was called the "third initiative". This initiative was to explore how the Leadership Network could assist Chautauqua County in becoming a sustainable community. (For details on this effort and Chase's role, see this document: http://chautauqualeadership.org/docs/CLNRetreatSummary2007-7-07.pdf, and specifically pages 14 and 15.)

Chase had become increasingly frustrated at the state of the county-wide community in regard to businesses and skilled population, as the county continued to shed jobs and people throughout the 80's, 90's and into the 2000's. From 1990 through 2005, Jamestown NY (the largest metro area in the county) lost 5,000 residents, which was the equivalent of over 15% of its total population. Additionally, Jamestown lost even more living-wage jobs than could be accounted for in the drop of population, and this discrepancy was due to New York City relocating social service recipients to Jamestown as the cost of living was dramatically less than in the City. So it was theorized that the skilled workforce population had dropped even more significantly than the 5,000 resident decrease in overall population.

Chautauqua County NY was among the highest taxed in the entire nation, and yet had the lowest housing valuations with the average home costing less than $50,000. The region had continued to be blighted and Chase worked to change this direction on behalf of the community and his own well being. Unfortunately, Chase closed his own company at the end of 2007 and moved to the closest truly metropolitan area, being Buffalo NY. Thus Chase was never able to see his vision realized, though he has heard that good things are starting to happen in Chautauqua County.

Jamestown Chamber of Commerce - 2004 through 2006

As a small business owner who was trying to stimulate the local economy, Colin Chase was asked to sit on the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors in 2004. Chase was moved into the role of Communications Committee Chairman and remained in this position during his 2-year tenure on the Board. Chase worked with the Chamber on a variety of initiatives through the end of 2006 when he stepped down from the Board.

Jamestown BIG Day Business Expo - 2003 & 2004

As a small business owner in 2003, Colin Chase organized and implemented the Jamestown BIG Day event, which was the largest business expo in the Chautauqua County region. Chase and his marketing firm implemented this event for two years in a row. BIG stood for Business Inspired Growth and was feeding off the popularity of Microsoft's Big Day events. Even though the software giant's events were somewhat small and meant solely for pushing their software solutions, yet these events were highly advertised in the business community. Chase opted to tap into this branding by naming the business exposition with a similar title.

The first event in 2003 drew over 400 business people even though there was a weather emergency that made getting to the Jamestown Ice Arena difficult. The first event had 18 workshops and approximately 30 vendors on the floor.

The second event in 2004 had over 400 people register just for the 18 workshops, and over 1,000 business people attended the event. The second BIG Day had 48 vendors on the floor providing much needed B2B commerce. These events were targeted only at the business community, and were held during the day time only.

Jamestown BIG Day had a Goal to Educate and Connect.

A third event was planned and was to be executed by the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce in 2005, as it was too much of a financial strain on Chase's company to provide this service free of charge to the business community. Unfortunately, even though the Chamber received the assistance it required from Chase in 2005 and then again in 2006, the third event never took place.

This event occurred in Chautauqua County NY, which has less than 100,000 residents county-wide. So when 1,000 business people attended the second event, it was deemed an amazing turnout. Interestingly, the Archive.org WayBack project has various versions of the Jamestown BIG Day event website archived here: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://jamestownbigday.com.

HIV & AIDS Awareness - 1998 through 2000

Colin Chase has been involved in a variety of civic activities for the betterment of his immediate region. While working at the Jamestown Community College in 1998, Chase was the Club Advisor for the Start Thinking Group, which was a student club dedicated to engaging in social issues such as the spread of HIV. Chase also assisted the efforts of other AIDS Awareness organizations in the late 1990's after losing a brother to complications relating to HIV infection in 1996.

The Safer Sex lectures by Dr. Rzepkowski were a little alarming for the small western NY town, but not for the college.
Chase organized the "Safer Sex" lecture series three times on the campus, scheduling the renowned HIV-infected physician Dr. Neal Rzepkowski. The student club under Chase's direction also engaged in a number of publicity-generating activities, such as the Easter Egg Condom Hunt. This group also formed a public group not affiliated as a student club, which would distribute literature and condoms at local night clubs between 12 midnight and 3 am.

Chase also organized an event for this club to go to Philadelphia PA and work at a homeless shelter for one day. This event was life-changing for many of the students as they had grown up in a semi-secluded small western NY town. Seeing firsthand the lifestyle of homeless people and learning of the circumstances that drove them to this shelter, was eye-opening for all involved.

Personal Life

Colin Chase has been deeply involved in a number of areas over the course of his life where he has felt strongly the need to speak up and take a leadership role. During his 20's and 30's his focus was on his career and on a number of social issues that commanded his attention. However, at the end of the day there are only 24 hours and with such there is only so much a person can consistently focus his attention upon.

At the end of 2008 Colin Chase met Laura Woodfield and the two began a serious relationship within a few months of dating. Laura Woodfield, a single mother of two, had put herself through college earning a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from Fredonia State University. Laura has held numerous managerial positions since graduating college, specifically in the world of finances. Currently Laura is the Payroll Manager for one Rochester NY's largest non-profit organizations with over 400 employees.

Colin Chase and Laura Woodfield were married on September 4th, 2010 on the beautiful Sonnenberg Gardens Estate in Canandiagua, NY. The ceremony was small and very personal with only a few dozen family and friends.

Life is short as there are only 24 hours in each day, so we all have to choose where to invest our time. For Chase his time is now being spent dually on his career and with his newly found family. Chase desires to further his career while giving his free time to his family.
